Well, at least you can boot into Safe Mode. That is a good start. First thing
you want to do while in Safe Mode, is run SCANDISK. Go to Start - Programs - Accessories
- System Tools - and click on ScanDisk. First run it in Normal Mode and allow it
to Automatically fix errors. When done, run it again in Thorough mode, this can take
hours if you have a large disk dive.
This should check out and maybe fix any disk drive releated problems. But at this
point, as it is a used system, we have no idea how it has been changed, or what you
have installed on it.
Next manually run your Anti-Virus program (hope it has been updated recently)
and any spyware/Adware scanning programs that are installed.
Spend some time reading through page and its links so you know a little bit more about troubleshooting
Windows ME problems. (look at the Microsoft link for doing this).
Then if you can not get it to boot into normal mode, use MSCONFIG to set Diagnostic
Startup mode and see if that works. It should allow you to start tracking down what
has infected or damaged your system. Post back after you know a little more about
what is wrong.
