If I read your post correctly, your problems with applications running slow started
when you installed the Windows Updates. And that Windows programs such as ScanDisk,
Defrag, Control Panel functions and Internet Explorer seem to work OK. Only other
MS applications run slow.
Most likely then, one of the DLL modules downloaded in the updates is corrupted.
It would have to be something not used by system programs, but common to applications.
The IE updates have the largest effect on common program modules. So try doing
a REPAIR of IE through the Add/Remove Programs, even if you have tried it before.
Also make sure you have the latest update for IE installed from the Windows Update
site.
Next, there could have been a problem with the DirectX 9.0c update. The only way
to fix it would be to download the DirectX
9.0c Redistributable package package, run it to expand it into a temporary folder
and run its setup again. This should replace all of its modules. (You would need
broadband as this is a 34MB download. Keep a copy on a CD-R in case you ever need
it again.)
