Carol J:
Thanks so much for your help. You said:
CJ: "I would suggest you reinstall IE 6.0 and run the repair tool...."
I did so. Alas, it didn't solve the problem.
CJ: "What programs did you use to scan with?"
Before your advice, I used Norton Anti-Virus, and a spyware program called "Spyware
Doctor" (which is not listed as "suspect" on the link you provided).
CJ: "...if you didn't use Ad-Aware or Spybot S&D, you should run one or both of those."
I downloaded and used both. They did find and fix additional objects of concern,
but this didn't solve the problem.
CJ: "Many malwares attach themselves to IE and casue strange problems, and it sounds
like a malware infection of some kind. Is this the only problem you're having on
your system?"
Nothing radical. Sometimes I have to try a couple times to get the system to boot
up (it gets hung up and some point in the process, before my desktop appears); and
sometimes the system operates very slowly--so that when I type in any application,
letters appear one or two per second, much more slowly than I type. Usually this
problem occurs when I have two or more applications running (say, wordprocessing
and a browser) and it is fixed when I close one of them.
Task Manager shows no alien processes, and my start-up list on msconfig shows nothing
weird.
I suppose I'll phone MicroSoft and pay them $35 to listen to my problems--unless
someone has another suggestion?
Thanks! --David
