The newer versions of AOL are likely different. I just happened to think of that
graphics setting.
If Scan disk and defrag have never completed, and you haven't ran them on a regular
basis, it can make a big difference. Defrag will not complete, if there are errors
on the drive, which is why Scan disk must be ran first. Try my instructions on running
Scan disk in Standard mode then defrag. Clear out temporary internet files and other
temp files first. Check this post for additional junk files to clear out, but disregard
the registry cleaning and running 'Spider'. ME users should use Delindex, link on
Jack's page. You can do that another time:
Clearing out Junk Files
Internet Options - General tab - delete temporary internet files and choose 'delete
all Offline content'. Clear History. Start - Find - Files or folders - in the named
box type: *.tmp. Choose Edit - select all - File - delete. Do the same for *.chk.
Then type: temp. Empty the contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder,
if you have one. Delete this folder - C:\Windows\Applog. It's not needed and is related
to Taskmon's useless purpose. It'll be re-created at bootup, but it'll be empty.
Empty Recycle bin.
You've done this, but...Uncheck Taskmon in 'msconfig' under startup tab: Start -
Run - type: msconfig - uncheck it then Apply. Close all tray applications, then hit
Ctl_Alt_Del and End Task on everything but Explorer and Systray. Disable your screensaver
by temporarily setting to "None." Run scandisk in "Standard" mode then defrag,. First,
in defrag settings, uncheck "rearrange program files so my programs start faster".
Reboot.
Tip: If you're using Microsoft Office, follow Microsoft's instructions to kill the
Find Fast Indexer. It interferes with maintenance. Do NOT renable it; it's usless
and uses lots of resources. Kill Find Fast
If necessary, use this app to kill all running processes: EnditAll 1
