disable screensaver

I find that if I try to run scandisk and then defrag, when the screensaver kicks
in, it halts the operation with a message that "scandisk has tried to restart ten
times etc," I have since tried to run these operations in safe mode but I still find
the same message.
I think I have to disable the screensaver to run these ops successfully in
safe mode. How do I do it?
