Normally you would right click on the DeskTop, select properties, then Screen
Saver tab. Then in the Screen Saver pull down list, select the top (None) entry and
click Apply. Another option would be to increase the Wait before the Screen Saver
kicks in.
However, you must not be using one of the normal default Windows ME screen savers,
as they do not normally interfere with ScanDisk and Defrag. Nor do the work in Safe
Mode. It sounds like you have "downloaded" a AD based screen saver that is really
a front for some sort of hidden background processes that is writing to the disk
drive when it kicks in.
Be sure to post back if disabling the screen saver solves the defrag problem,
and what screen saver it is. Any information on where it came from might be useful
to others. Some people have problems with ScanDisk and Defrag not being able to run
even in Safe Mode, and it would be interesting to find out what some of the causes
of this are.
