Strange?

The version of Paint that ships with Windows ME has never been able to save images in JPG format by itself. It only works with BMP and that is all it can save files as. It has a Filter option that allows it to OPEN JPG files and convert them to BMP. This default Windows ME filter is Jpegim32.flt (172,520 bytes). The program does support the use of "add-on" FILTERS that support other formats and allows saving of files.

For example, Microsoft Word for Windows provides an assortment of filters you can install that support both opening and saving of JPG, GIF and other file formats. If you remove MS WORD, then Paint can no longer save JPG files or handle GIF files. Also, if you install the Service Pack updates for Office 2000 SP1 or S2, then Registry entries for supporting these filters get deleted.

To enable JPG and GIF support in paint look for the following files on your computer. They should be in BOTH locations. If missing in one folder copy it from the other.

C:\Windows\MsApps\Grphflt\
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt\

Both should have the file Jpegim32.flt in them. They could also both have Gifimp32.flt in them for GIF file support. These files should be about 274KB or larger in size to support both Import and Export (saving) of JPG and GIF formats.

So first step is to make sure you have the Jpegim32.flt file in both locations. If not you can download a copy from Jpegim32.flt and save a copy in both folder locations.

If that does not restore your ability to save JPG files with PAINT, then you will have to add Registry modifications. Download this EXPORT JPG.reg file and OPEN it and run it to update your Registry with the options to save JPG files (256 color limit). Note that is will only allow export or saving of JPG files, not JPEG files. And they are limited to 256 colors. If you had JPEG support and more colors, you were using a different version of MS PAINT. For opening JPG files, if the Registry entries have been deleted by Office SP1/2, then you may also need to add Import JPG.reg.

For 256 color GIF support get Gifimp32.flt and place in both folders and it necessary Open the Registry modifications Import GIF.reg and Export GIF.reg.
