Try booting with a Windows ME startup diskette and at the A:\ prompt run ScanDisk
on the drive to check it. Let it run for awhile to make sure the drive is OK.
SCANDISK C:
If that checks out OK, then run the following command from the A:\ prompt:
FDISK /mbr
Then remove diskette and try booting the system.
