ME on XP Wireless: difficulty finding channel

I have a 3 system wireless network via Linksys wireless router. XP desktop wired to router, xp notebook via built-in wireless and wife's ME desktop connected through Linksys USB 2.5. The xp machines run fine for the most part, but the ME machine has trouble finding the correct channel (channel 1 on router). It keeps connecting to channel 6, though it isn't able to access the internet on that channel (may be neighbor's network?). If I juggle the wireless usb device around, I can usually get it to connect eventually, but if there is any sort of load on my other machines (downloading large files, for example) the ME machine loses it's signal. My laptop and wife's desktop are in the same room, in close proximity. Is there any way to "hardwire" the wireless connection to channel 1? Usually when I do a site survey, it cannot find the channel 1 connection and it's frustrating because the utility won't let me set the channel directly. Any help gratefully accepted.
