Help! I recently purchased a Freecom FHD-3 160 GB external hard drive which, it stated,
was already pre-formatted as one large Fat 32 partition. I have a P4-WinME-based
system. I happily started storing data on this drive - then discovered that 'Defrag'
wouldn't work.It would get about 2/3rds of the way through, then send out error messages.
I tracked down various info about 48-bit LBA and not recognizing drives larger than
137 GB, so decided to try creating two smaller partitions using Partition Magic 6
- one Primary of approx 57 GB and the other Extended/Logical of approx 100 GB. My
logic was that, since both partitions were under the 137GB max, then WinME would
successfully be able to 'Defrag' and 'Scandisk' either.
It started well enough - PMagic created the first Primary partition (containing all
my data) of 57 GB, but, after waiting hours and hours, it simply would not finish
creating the second partition. I ended up with 100 GB of 'Unallocated Space'. I tried
turning this into a new partition and left my machine running overnight - after more
than 12 hours it was stuck round the 20% mark. So I now have a 160GB drive with a
usable partition of 57 GB (which, incidentally, WinME still refuses to scan or defrag)
and 100 GB which has disappeared. PLEASE!!! Can anyone please tell me either A) how
to restore this drive to it's original capacity WITHOUT destroying the existing 35
or so GB o data B)and if this is possible, how then can I subsequently defrag and
scandisk this single large partition or C) how can I finish turning the 100 GB of
'Unallocated Space' into a proper Extended/Logical partition and finally, D) even
if I WAS able to end up with 2 smaller partitions of approx 57 and 100 GBs, would
this actually allow WinME to Scandisk and Defrag each properly? I would be hugely
grateful for any help here. Ta, muchly.
