Try booting into Safe Mode. (Hold the right Ctrl key down be for the initial Windows
ME splash screen come up, and select the Safe Mode option.)
From Safe Mode you can run SCANDISK first and then other scanning programs.
Serveral boots into Safe Mode and then normal mode might fix a few problems.
