folder sharing fails password

I have a p2p network between my ME and XP pc. I have configured various folders
Shared with different levels of access (some read-only, some full access). But sometimes
(but now more recently it seems) when I attempt to access a ME folder from the XP
pc, and get prompted for the password, the system seems to fail recognizing the password.
I have checked and double-checked and typed very carefully (no CAPS, for example)
but the retries just fail. Is there something I can do to recover the netword Shares
(software refresh of some kind?) to work properly without resorting rebooting either
pc and hoping that all wil work?
