Yes.. not knowing that SafeMode would help, I would boot to SafeMode to atleast run
Scandisk and assure myself that the computer can still boot! Then.. booting into
regular mode seemed to work! However.. the next time I would need to bootup the
computer, the "no icons" problem would be back. Meanwhile, I performed the "Max
Cached Icons" Key value suggest by MSKB (making the DWORD = 2000) as well as switching
between 16bit and 32bit and back again. And before I just down the computer for
the night, I will delete the ShellIconCache file.
I've learned that another symptom of the problem is the seemingly random or sudden
change of icons to another image! That was happening on my sytem too - but interestingly
only on a handful (not more than 5) icon at a time.
