Here is My advice whgich presents the Logical steps to take.
First make sure you have Jumpers for master slave set correctly on all drives, and
that the master drive is always connected to the END of the cable while slave is
connected in the middle
Second, make sure you have proper BIOS support for the drive. Usually the easiest
way to do this is to enter in the BIOS setup, and select AUTO for that drive. Some
BIOSes you must also put the LBA selection in manually or select AUTO as well.
Third, windows SHOULD detect the drive automatically once it is properly configured.
Notes> if your BIOS date shows something older than 1999, your system may support
a maximum sixe of 8 Gig. IF that is the case, you can install Maxtor's drive installation
utilities which should be available on the maxtor web site. * I think you said the
drive was a MAxtor. I have a system with a BIOS date of 1997 and it supports larger
than 8 Gig drives. However too , I ALWAYS use the MAxtor Utility on my Maxtor drives,
because I frequently move drives from system to system. When I move them, I have
no problem reading them on whatever system.
Some versions of the maxtor utilities also include diagnostics, to see if you hjave
a BIOS incompatibility or whether you need the software. At least, they check compatibility
and format the drive usually ensuring greatest compatibility.
