Lisa,
Your problem sounds like a bad power supply, but in case it's not, there are a few
items you can check. These are the things that I look at (after checking power supply
voltages) when I get a system that's DOA.
Note: Before playing with ANYTHING inside the computer, DISCONNECT THE POWER CORD;
don't just turn the computer off. This precaution has nothing to do with static;
all newer computers supply voltage to the motherboards for some functions, even though
they appear to be "off". To avoid damage to the computer (or worse, damage to YOU),
unplug it! :)
1. Be sure that all cards are fully inserted in their slots. Some people don't believe
in taking time to install the single screw that holds each card in its slot, but
hours of troubleshooting can be wasted because of this simple, lazy omission.
2. If yours is an HP/Compaq machine, they have a habit of working their CPU cards
loose and collecting dust on the connections. Again, be sure that the CPU card is
fully inserted in its connector.
3. Although this isn't likely to be your problem, be sure that all memory modules
are fully inserted and locked in their slots.
Plug the computer in and test.
Let us know the results.

p.s. Two questions: How do you know that the "eathernet" (should be "ethernet" :-))
card wasn't working? And did you remove it after you decided that it wasn't working?
