I had exactly this same problem. System Restore had maxed out at 66% of my tiny 4GiG
hard drive, and I had uninstalled everything but my browser and email program to
increase my disk space so I could still get online to search for answers. System
Restore didn't work in any way way. After reading all the possibilities here, I took
courage and went into Start/Search/Files and Folders and typed _RESTORE and clicked
Search Now. The _RESTORE folder was the only one that came up. I clicked on it and
hit the delete button. It took almost 20 minutes for the file to empty, too much
for the recycle bin, so I sent it into permanent delete. I rebooted as I held my
breath to see if I still had a computer and all came back except for my Outlook Express
in which a MSOE.DLL wouldn't load to open it. I did a re-install of IEsetup, which
fixed my OE in short order.
My System Restore is still "broken" and the _RESTORE file never reappeared on my
computer. My computer has sped up considerably again and I am happy, Happy, HAPPY!!!
I have reinstalled all the programs I had previously and added a few and still have
half my hard drive free.
