Bull shit. I have one of those LG drives working on my Windows ME system, works
just fine.
The support people did not want to deal with you because you have no clue what
is going on. And they have no obligation to help or "support" you using their drive,
as they did not sell it directly to you and/or it is out of warranty. They only support
the drive not the software packages that use the drive.
Windows 98/98se/ME/2000 do NOT have any CD-R or CD-RW drive burner support software
built into it. Windows XP does have a limited version.
OEM manufactures, such as DELL, when they included a CD-RW drive in a Windows
98/ME/2000 system also installed an OEM version of one of the CD-R/CD-RW software
packages from a company like Adaptec (now ROXIO) or NERO. They paid that company
a fee for each copy, and that copy only works on their systems, using that one vendor's
drive and using a specific version of the operating system. (Windows XP has a limited
burner software built into it so the OEM's no longer have to pay those companies
a fee for each machine they ship with a CD-RW drive.)
LG only sold the drive. They did not provide DELL with any software, and hence
they do not "support" (as in provide end users with software to make it work) on
Windows 98/ME. The do "support" it on XP systems as XP has CD burner software built
in.
DELL will have updates for the copy of the burner software that was shipped on
the system. But they do not provide a copy of that burner software that you can install
on a different version of Windows.
When LG sells a drive directly to the end user, it includes a copy of NERO software,
OEM Drive version. They paid NERO for that limited use copy. It is limited to being
installed on one system and version of Windows, and that brand of drive, and has
to be registered to get the fixes from NERO so that all functions work.
So either way, your old CD burner software has been used on one system and version
of Windows and registered to it. No one now provides you a FREE software application
package for burning CD-R and CD-RW disks for other versions of Windows or other systems
or other brands of CD-RW drives. (Well, except if you upgrade to XP and the limited
burning functions built into it.)
Usually you can upgrade a Windows operating system from 98 to ME and the burner
software that is installed will still work. Or you can reload the WIndows software
as it came from the OEM manufacture. But it will normally not work if you have replaced
the CD-RW drive with a different brand of drive.
As you did a clean install of Windows ME, and do not have a Retail install CD
for NERO, Adaptec/ROXIO or other burner software package, you will have to go out
and buy one. As in spend a little money for a copy, install and register it so you
can download the update/fixes for it so everything works. These Retail software packages
work with all brands of CD-RW drive. Most people like the NERO package. I prefer
the older ROXIO software packages, but not the newest ones. Expect to pay $60 to
$99 for such software packages.
Quick way to go is the NERO.com online web page. Using broadband connection you
can download a Trial version of their $80 complete package of NERO version 7 to try
for 30 days, then remove it or pay for it. Same offer from ROXIO.com for its Easy
CD Creator version 8. These are 300MB downloads. If using dial-up you can usually
buy the package for about the same price off the shelf at stores that sell computers
and computer supplies (Office Depot, Offic Max, Staples, CompUSA, etc.), but you
then need to install it, register it online and then download the updates to it once
you get it installed.
