With the the network/Internet active you could be using memory not normally used, parts of the disk drive software not normally accessed, or having Malware programs trying to call home when they detect the Internet/network connection. One thing to try, is starting up with the modem not plugged into the Internet side so any malware can not reach their friends. Best to start at the top of the list and check that the system hardware is OK and the system is clean of such Malware.
