Who's modem is it. Yours or your ISP's. What brand/model is it. Some you can
access as http://192.168.100.1.
But as suggested, you may want to take the router out from between the system and
the modem (power everything off first) as you know the system is OK and can talk
to the router. Then it should be able to talk directly to the modem. Try it with
the modem unplugged from the phone line or cable connection. Phone line connections
seldom let you into the modem directly, most cable modems do.
Also, if the modem is not establishing a connection with the ISP's equipment,
it will hang its interface to your computer and you can not access it with the above
IP address. That it why you want to try it with their side disconnected also. It
might take awhile before you can access it.
When they checked the lines, did they do it from their sub office or did they
come out and check it. Normally they will only check it from their outside connector,
with you being responsible for the cables inside and to the modem. Often good technicians
will come in and test it from the modem connection to.
But if you can access the router and ping it, you should be able to access the
modem. However, they do go bad and have to be replaced. I lost my Cable Modem last
summer due to heat. It looks like it is working but does not actually work at all.
And the router was dead also. Sometimes you have to just buy a new modem.
To make sure it is not your IE, you always have the option of using a dial-up
connection. I keep a dial-up account active, and use it to check friends systems
with. If you don't have a working dial-up modem, you might need to find someone with
a working external modem and an ISP account that they can test your system and your
IE with.
Also the DOS window PING command does not use IE. If you can PING your router
(192.168.1.1 normally) and not
the modem or anything past it, you know where the problem is. Just to be sure, try
a different short Ethernet cable between the router and modem. They sometimes get
damaged or go bad.
And is the modem setup to handle PPPoE and ISP logon or is it a default on Cable
modem. Sometimes the routers can lose their login setup information due to power
glitches at just the wrong time. You should be able to check that in the routers
setup screens.
