If those types of problems continue after reloading a clean copy of Windows ME
on the disk drive, it should tell you that it is not a Windows ME problem, but a
hardware failure problem.
Could be a memory module going bad and failing. So you need to run a good standalone
memory test like
MemTest86_v3.2 for several hours.
It can also be due to over heating, so have you bothered to check that the power
supply fan is running and/or not clogged with dust, along with any other fans on
the case. Then open it up and check that the fan on the processor is running and
not clogged with dust. May be time to take it outside and blow the dust bunnies out
of it.
As disk drives age they start to fail. One of the most common problems is "morning
sickness" or disk read failures when the drive is cold and just starting up after
being off over night. That is a sign the drive motor electronics is starting to fail,
and it will just get worse. You can leave it on 24/7 but some day when you shut it
off, you will find it dead when trying to start the disk drive back up.
