Or you could just spend some time cleaning Windows ME up a bit. Does wonders and
only takes time, some work and downloading and running a few Windows Updates, Malware
scanners and cleaners.
See page for a whole list of things you can do, including making sure
you have the latest Microsoft Windows Updates for fixes and Security. The updates
and Internet Explorer 6.0 sp1 actually replace parts of Windows ME code and can fix
some "corrupted" code problems in the process.
But you are right, XP would be too slow on that machine and you would loose everything
in the process, including any optional programs the system vendor installed, like
MS Office, MS Word, etc. which are not part of the OS. Windows 2000/NT came out about
the same time as Windows ME and for laptop users with older machines have little
advantage, other than a big service pack update instead of a lot of smaller updates.
And now is not the best time to be buying a new system and OS. Currently all new
systems come with with Windows XP or XP Pro. But Microsoft Vista will be coming out
early next year (yep, delayed again) and the system vendors will be coming out with
all new and much faster systems designed to run Vista. Making what you have run better
is your best option for now.
