On most PC compatible computers, the POST code (Power On Self Test) when it completes testing the system board hardware and connecting with devices such as the disk drives and CD-Rom drives, and has finished hardware initialization, without any hardware errors, will give one short beep of the system board speaker.

Has nothing to do with Windows ME or the operating system that the POST code will then next attempt to start booting from the default boot device(s), after the beep.
