Won't start from Hibernatin

I am currently running Win ME and was trying to update to XP and it locked up. Now if I turn the computer off and try to turn it back on it goes into hibernation and you can't do anything else. i tried holding the ctr button down on start up but that doesnt work (to get into safe mode).
