Problems installing wireless adapter

Hi I have a Dell PC running Windows ME which I am hoping to set up as a spare PC for the kids. Have already added an extra 128MB memory. I have an existing wireless network at home and wanted to connect this PC via a network adapter. I have installed a Realtek USB adapter - it took a while but finally got it all installed, it is showing as a device in device manager and I can see it when I click on networking. However the icon for the adapter has a red cross through it and when I mouse over it, it says "disconnected". Any suggestions for how I connect it? I tried to load the software for my broadband internet service, but that tells me it cannot detect a wireless connection. Thanks! Please use simple language in any replies as I am not a PC expert!
