If you are using a a Windows ME CD, or the setup.exe file in the cab files of Windows, then your data should be fine. If you are using a System Restore CD from the Manufacture of the Computer, then I don't know. The System Restore CD's will sometimes format the Computer, but the one I have used you needed to boot to them for that to happen. I have my data always backed up. so the few times I have tried a inplace install, I never really worried. Things can go bad when messing with Computers, so the do at your own risk always applies.
