display adapter and restart

I've lost my 256 colors and tried to get them back on but , I can't restart unless
I use the power off button. I've restored back to factory condition and no help same
problem. I've got a compac presario 5000-5WV261,windows ME. I know it old and outdated!
Any help would be great! Thanks Carol
