thanks keith i already tried that,i am beginning to beleive this is a much larger problem than a missing ddl. i would do a lobotomy and completly reinstall the os but i can't get into control panel or my computer and if i get in through windows explorer to access the cd drive it dosn't give me the option of not just doing an overwrite. and if i did get to reload the os do i need the oem (which dell didn't include) to do it. and what if the registry is messed up? i can access the internet but sometimes typing in a an address things like control panel opens. strange things---i beleive its been contaminated even though virus scans show nothing. to summerize if you know a way to completly reinstall the os without aceessing my computer and how do i fix a possible corrupt registry. fortunatly i do not to save anything in the computer if there is no answer i might concider bringing it to my compurter guy or using it as an anchor. thanks george
