Dialing internet

This past weekend I was working off line and without warning my system started to
dial for access to the internet (I still use dial-up). I was working off line the
next day and a dialing icon appeared in the upper right corner of my screen, even
though I had disconnected the wire connecting me to the telephone lines. Has anyone
else had this problem? I lost the work I was working on in the first instance, but
was able to recreate it from back up information. I ran my Spyware scan and my system
came up clean.
Please advise. I have received calls to my telephone and when answering there is
no one on the line. Could this situation be connected? Thanks for any help and/or
advice.
