Tony, don't panic. Your data is safe. The error message only means that you have
a (temporary) problem in loading Windows. Probably it can be cured easily.
Do a Google search to find yourself a start-up disk on the internet. You want a boot
disk for Win ME. There are several sites that you can download one from, in the form
of a program that will format a blank 3.5" floppy for you as a bootable disk.
Use it to start your system, and carry out the instruction to go to the C: prompt
and there type the command: SCANREG /RESTORE
(Note that there is NO space between the / and the RESTORE in this command)
This command will run a program (the SCANREG.EXE program) that allows you to install
one of several backup copies of your system files. Windows usually keeps 5 backup
copies, each one dated, and these normally include SYSTEM.INI, so restoring an earlier
backup should cure your problem.
Choose to restore one that's dated BEFORE the problem arose. Make sure it's one that
is marked as having been SUCCESSFUL in previously starting your system. If in doubt,
choose the one with the oldest date (which will normally be dated 5 days ago).
