I had more than one client that lost all their data thinking a factory "restore" meant the same as Microsoft's restore. Most systems back then could not boot from a CD so the floppy disk you have sounds like it's needed to boot DOS and load the CDROM drivers and set the path variable to look first at a CD (hence the "drive D" error). Try this: go to www.bootdisk.com and get a WindowsMe floppy boot disk. When you boot from that you can run the DOS version of scandisk (don't forget it's scandisk C:) and scanreg.
