Monitor controls

Keith's advice in this thread is valid:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme/1174692321.

Reinstall the Device Drivers

Open the Device Manager to see whether your Monitor or Display Adapter has a problem.
Go to:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Device Manager

If either the Monitor or the Display Adapter is shown there as faulty (an exclamation
mark will be displayed if there is a fault), or perhaps even if neither of them is
so marked, try re-installing the device drivers (on the Properties tab) for BOTH
of those devices. Highlight a device, and then go to:

Properties > Driver > Update Driver > Specify the location > Next
 > Display a list > Next

and then click on one of the compatible drivers in the list that's displayed, and
then click Finish. Do the same with the other device too.

If you decide to use the option "Search for a better driver" instead, the locations
to point the update function / wizard to, when trying to find the correct driver
file, are:

 C:\WINDOWS
 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
 C:\WINDOWS\IOSUBSYS
 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS

Then reboot the computer, to see if this has done any good.

Clear out Ghost Entries

Reboot into SAFE mode (press F5 or F8 on restarting the computer) and open Device
Manager. Delete all "ghost" entries (those which only show up in Safe Mode), as they
can cause a conflict with other installed device drivers. Then reboot normally.

My tip is that if you find a "ghost" entry for the Monitor or the Display Adapter,
you should delete ALL the devices listed under Monitor or Display Adapter, to give
Windows the best chance of doing a clean reinstall of the device.
