You will need to fix the problem with Windows by starting up in DOS mode, and using
DOS programs to cure the fault.
Step 1: Boot to DOS using a bootable Win ME floppy from http://www.bootdisk.com
and then type the following at the A: prompt in order to switch to your C drive -
C:
Step 2: At the C:\ prompt type this -
SCANREG /RESTORE
and follow the instructions on your screen. Try to restore the *oldest* backup of
the registry (they're listed by date), as that's the one with the best chance of
being from before the problem arose.
By default Windows keeps 5 backup copies of the Windows Registry, so that you can
go back to before the problem arose.
When the message flashes up to tell you the registry is successfully restored, try
to restart the computer normally.
Step 3: Bad luck if you have to go this far! If step 2 doesn't solve the problem,
boot to the C: prompt and type this instead -
SCANREG /FIX
This one will take 5 or 10 minutes. When the message flashes up to tell you that
the registry is successfully fixed, try to restart the computer normally.
If the computer seems to "freeze" during this step, DON'T touch anything! This is
normal. Wait the full ten minutes; the process does NOT give much visual feedback,
but it is *very* important NOT to interrupt this step once you have begun it.
If none of this gets Windows running normally, post a full and detailed description
here of every step you took, and of what the outcome of each step was, and I will
then try some other suggestions.
