Icons that are by the clock are applications that are running in the background. 
If this icon shows up as soon as Windows starts up then you need to Run: msconfig 
this will show you what apps are running on start up, you can remove what you want. 
A better method would be find what is running from the registry but it depends on 
how experienced you are.
