pdf conflicts?

I have been having trouble for a long time whenever adobe reader is used. It seems
to take forever to load and sometimes freezes everthing up.I dread the times when
there is something I would like to view in pdf.
Win ME,512mb Ram in a Dell 800 laptop. Thanks for any ideas Jim
