MSDOS.SYS is a hidden file in the C:\ root directory, so to edit it at the DOS prompt
type these entries, pressing ENTER after each line -
C:
CD \WINDOWS\COMMAND
ATTRIB -R -H -S C:\MSDOS.SYS
EDIT C:\MSDOS.SYS
However, this will not assist you, since in Windows ME the WinBootDir entry is in
the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This is a hidden file in the C:\ root directory. To edit it
type these entries, pressing ENTER after each line -
C:
CD \WINDOWS\COMMAND
ATTRIB -R -H -S C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
This will run the Edit program, with which you carefully change only the WinBootDir
line so that it reads thus:
SET winbootdir=C:\WINDOWS
