I bought a new modem, pulled out the old one and popped in the new one. I fired up
the computer but nothing came up as finding a new device. I checked around and the
new modem is no where to be found. My computer can't detect it and states that there
isn't a modem installed. After shutting down I pulled the new one out and put it
in a different empty slot. After restarting, the computer immediately detected it
and I was able to install its drivers. Something was wrong with that slot where the
old modem was installed. I tried to connect to my ISP hoping all was fixed but I
got the same problem as what was happening to my old modem. So I don't feel the modem
was the problem. I am wondering that if there isn't something going on with the motherboard
and that maybe it is going bad. Sometimes my computer won't recognize that I have
a CD in the drive and it keeps asking for me to insert it. It doesn't happen all
the time but I noticed that was something new lately. Sometimes the CD drive works
and sometimes it won't run at all. Also, the blinking of the display when I am starting
Windows. When the icons come up they are all little generic boxes and while they
are turning into what they are supposed to look like, some will disappear in squarish
sections and then reappear. This is something that just started happening lately.
There are a lot of strange things happening, some sporatic, some all the time. I
thought maybe it was a virus but nothing comes up in my scans. I have two other computers
both older than this one and I never have any of these problems including the internet
connection. That's why I am concluding that it is either my motherboard going bad,
the power supply going bad or things just got so screwed up on this computer somehow
that I may have to format the whole thing, reinstall Windows and see if that doesn't
fix things. If the problem lies in my motherboard or power supply, then maybe it
is indeed time to get a new computer.
Thanks
