" So I don't feel the modem was the problem. I am wondering that if there isn't something going on with the motherboard and that maybe it is going bad. Sometimes my computer won't recognize that I have a CD in the drive and it keeps asking for me to insert it. It doesn't happen all the time but I noticed that was something new lately. Sometimes the CD drive works and sometimes it won't run at all."

Those are symptoms of a weak CMOS battery. When the computer is off it keeps the date and time. Additional demands are made of it as the computer boots. That is, the power supply has a slight delay in turning on and the CPU & BIOS depend on the CMOS battery for a fraction of a second to check the devices. Failure of the BIOS to recognize devices is the result long before the battery totally fails and loses the date.
