I'll wager that you're using a USB connection between the broadband modem and your
PC. That's the way most if not all ISP's set them up and thus they can load their
proprietay software to make it work. Bad idea. I NEVER use that setup as it usually
causes problems and adds unneeded software overhead. Practically all broadband modems
have an Ethernet port, and so should your laptop. Get an appropriate length CAT5
Ethernet cable. Power down the modem and connect the two that way, removing the USB
cable of course. Wait a couple of minutes then restart the modem so it can grab a
new network address. Next boot up your laptop and use the Internet Connection Wizard.
Tick the button that you connect through a LAN (which is actually the connection
from the modem to the laptop, a Local Area Network). You'll probably have to reboot
the laptop after that too so that the laptop can get it's new address from the modem.
All should work well from there. No additional software needed. Lastly, uninstall
the ISP's Blueyonder USB software as you won't need it anymore. Another added benefit
with this type of hookup is that if you ever need to go to Safe Mode for troubleshooting,
you'll be able to select "Safe Mode with Networking" and have Internet access to
do whatever downloading or whatever you need to do because Windows will load your
Ethernet driver in Safe Mode. Windows won't load USB drivers in Safe Mode so you'll
be stuck without Internet access.
