Most if not all providers want you to have W2K or XP, and some won't even provide
support for anything less.. One big reason is that Win 9X is missing needed modern
protcols for broadband services. You can find them and get Win 9X working but it
can be a pain to set up unless you are an expert. For Win 9X, you would be better
off adding a compatible broadband router between your computer and the modem. That
way, you can configure the router to work with your service and use TCPIP and DHCP
from Win 9X to the router and not have to install the providers software. This would
also give you a large degree of protection from sniffers and hackers by putting you
behind a hardware firewall for some degree of safety. Sounds like you may need assistance
from someone that knows the provider and what needs to be done to set it up correctly.
You can also check www.broadbandreports.com.. They have a lot of info on many of
the providers and how to set up different operating systems to work with the providers.
Also setups for routers on those providers systems.
