Sounds like you are automatically loading Spyware Detector on startup, so disable it and only run it when you actually want to do a scan for malware, i.e. only when you install a new program, or suspect a specific problem. That's something which will happen infrequently, so no there's no need to have Spyware Detector running all the time. Your firewall is what should be running, but a malware detector is like a virus scanner, it's only needed for specific jobs. For a firewall, if you don't have one, try the free Zone Alarm program.
