Absolutely more memory will help. I have an ME Gateway with 384meg memory and it does work better than when it had only 256 meg. You can buy 128meg chips for as little as $20 if you shop around. Most memory chips are made in Asia so brand names don't mean much. If they work, use them. Try a company online called Comptick. Good memory for low price.
