Thanks again CK, Your advice is very helpful.

Given the prices of HD's, I will take your advice and clone to a new drive.

Here's how I plan to proceed, changing only one thing at a time:
1) Find best h/w that supports WinMe. Plenty of legacy h/w is available and dropping
below 2Ghz is no big deal for me.
2) Purchase full retail WinMe and do repair install on old system. I think it's best
to do conversion from the OEM OS on existing system. Existing backup will protect
me here.
3) Do clean install of WinMe on new system to verify compatibility. Change h/w and/or
drivers as required.
4) Wipe drive in new system and clone old drive onto new drive.
5) Holding breath, do repair install of WinMe on new system
6) Create new partition and install XP in dual-boot configuration.

Does this sound like a reasonable plan?
