networking with crossover cables

Hello everyone,I have linked two computers together using netgear
nic cards and crossover cables,I am able to view folders between
the two computers but I cant seem to get on line with the client
computer.The server computer is running winxp and the client
computer is running Me,I cant install xp on the client computer
because I dont have enough ram installed.anyway if you
have any ideas on this thanks in advance.
