Crossover cables are designed to directly network one PC to another (as a 2 P.C. "LAN"), not for access to outside LAN/WAN's.

You could set up Internet Connection Sharing on the XP P.C., but I would recommend installing a second NIC to the ME P.C. for LAN/WAN access, if possible. (NIC PCI cards are inexpensive nowadays, even for Gigabit cards)
