Cant copy to disc

I thought I was good with computers but I cant save My Document files or other files to disc. I am getting an access denied error. I went to the Network Icon in Settings and adjusted the access appropriately. I also made sure Sharing was set for My Documents. This is my mothers computer and I want to upgrade from ME to Office Pro. I need to save her files and I cant copy them to disc. Any help would be appreciated as her computer stinks.
