Can't access running item in taskbar

Often when running a program such as Nero which takes a long time to complete a task, the taskbar icon will stop functioning - I won't be able to get it to display the running program on my desktop. Click the icon ("untitled project", for instance) and the button goes in, but nothing else happens. Right clicking also does nothing. Any way to restore my program? This truly qualifies as an annoyance, since I've had to restart the process on many occasions. Thanks, P.
