Explorer windows are blank after IE6 reinstall

I was working on a friends computer because she was getting an error doing boot-up
due to a problem with an IE6 update. I uninstalled IE6 with Internet Tools in the
Add/Remove Programs window and reinstalled IE6. The following problems now exist:
1) Opening windows like the control panel or the hard drive show at the bottom of
the window the number of items in the folder but the window is blank.
2) Outlook Express gives a msimn error.
Please help!
