No, you don't have any service packs installed or it would say "SP1" etc. In my
experience and those I talk to, you are better off staying with IE5.5 with it's service
packs and updates. IE6 was originally targeted for XP, and IE 7 really was targeted
for Vista but does work for XP as XP and Vista are both NT type systems while Win
9X is not (Win 9X= Win 95/98/98SE/ME)..
I've worked on some XP systems that won't work well with IE7 if they are to slow
and not enough memory or running to many processes. IE6 can totally choke a Win
9X machine depending on the specs of your machine (as in, not enough memory, fast
enough, to many processes/apps running/type of software programs installed which
can be incompatible sometimes etc). IE6 is a dramatically bigger code base and more
complicated than IE5.5.
I've worked on hundereds of machines still running Win 9X and a few will handle IE6,
but most either had problems immediately after upgrading to IE6 or shortly thereafter.
I have IE6 running on a Win 98 SE machine, but it is running a 2 gig processor with
512 meg of memory. It does OK, but can have some issues from time to time with the
plug-ins which are not all compatible with Win 98 and of course the security updates
will sometimes work and sometimes not.
You will find a lot of opinions here and other forums but most all pro's I know also
recommend staying with IE 5.5 updated for most Win 9X systems. Since it is recommended
that you not get further than 2 versions behind for the browser, you would be right
on the edge since IE7 is out. You can expect to have more issues with older browsers
as the support for them will eventually disappear from the webpages being written
anyway.
Not sure what other issues you may have going on, but I would drop back to IE5.5
if you can and see what happens. If still same issues, then you would have to dig
deeper into possible issues that may or may not have anything to do with the browser.
Lastly, MS has stated that since the support for Win 9X has ended, they are unable
to issue updates for IE6 that will be guaranteed to work on Win 9X system, in other
owrds, they can't patch the browser for vunerabilities and expect for it to be compatible
with Win 9X. You may indeed have problems.
If you Google the problem, you will see that others are also having issues with IE6
on Win 9X systems similar to yours. So that's why I suggest reverting back to IE5
if possible and see if your issues clear up.
