I didn't like IE6 or IE6sp1 on Win98 or Win98SE either and stayed with IE5.5sp2.
IE 6x seemed to make Windows Explorer less stable.
I also had a problem with the IE5.5sp2 crashing regulary at certain sites. Ebay was
the main offender. When I would flip through pages too quickly without giving them
time to fully load IE would crash.
In general the kinds of pages I had problems with contained many links and graphics.
I don't know if Windows update still works for Win9x. For one thing you can't access
the site unless you have IE6sp1 (IE6 ?) installed. I tried searching for updates
at Windows update catalog
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/
on a Win 2000 machine and it bounced me to a new version of that page. Search results
turned up no updates for Win 98 or WinMe. Don't know if 98SE and ME updates have
been pulled or were not offered because I was using Win 2000. However I was offered
updates for Win XP and Win 2003.
A good place to get updates for Win Me is at ERPman
http://erpman1.tripod.com/w98meupd.html
and for Internet Explorer
http://erpman1.tripod.com/iewmpupd.html
If you are on dial-up it may take some time for these pages to load but it is worth
it. Careful about some of the updates, some of them are unofficial. He also has links
to older versions of IE which you can download and burn to CD.
AXCEL216/MDGx Max Speed is another good place to look for updates if you have time
to read through it all.

Donna, if you can't seem to fix the problem, try using a different browser. Right
now I am trying out Opera. It has some good features but I still need Internet Explorer
for some things.
