To change the default setting that controls which e-mail program opens as the default
mail program, edit the Windows registry manually.
In Windows ME, this function is controlled by the following key in the registry -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail
Note: Make a backup of your Registry before making any changes! Go to START > RUN
and type SCANREGW then click OK to open the scanreg program, and use it to create
a backup of the registry.
Note: Make sure you are familiar with the command SCANREG /RESTORE and are comfortable
with booting to DOS to use that command, before making any changes to the registry!
To set a particular e-mail program as the default program -
1. To open the registry editor go to START > RUN, then in the box that opens type
REGEDIT then click OK.
2. Use REGEDIT to navigate to the above key in the registry.
3. Edit the value entitled (Default) to read, for example, "Outlook Express". You
do so by right-clicking on (Default), then clicking MODIFY, then making the change,
then clicking OK. Then close REGEDIT.
Other changes may be necessary, in order to correct any faults that exist in your
configuration. For instance, you may wish to delete a sub-key entitled YAHOO MAIL
left behind by a defective uninstall of that particular program.
